Photography - Network - Technology - Consultancy
Hello, and welcome to Vortrax Digital Innovation, the online presence of UK network engineer and photographer Glyn Storey. I have three main interests, photography, networking and computing, and most things technical. Follow the links on this page to find out more.
Visit the Vortrax Gallery for albums on Travel, railways, Aircraft, Places and many more…
Many of the techniques and network services used by large enterprise networks can be used to good effect in small office and larger home and test network environments. The small office networks project, 'VXNetWorx', explores the use of DHCP and DNS servers, IP addressing, syslog and web servers, networked attached storage (NAS) and more.
Learn more about the small office network project, and IP networks generally, using the useful guides explaining the basics as well as some more advanced features. Visit the VXNetWorx project site to find out more,
An interest in photography and a career in IP network engineering brings together a number of technical disciplines such as the computing and storage requirements for managing over 90,000 photographic images, not to mention video and audio recordings. This in turn led to the requirement for a home/small office network consisting of several PCs, multiple networks attached storage units, routers and network switches. Managing this complexity in a small office/home network led to the use of enterprise network services such as dedicated DHCP and DNS servers, an IP addressing plan and development web servers. The resulting home network is documented in the VXNetWorx project.
Along the way, other home network technologies were incorporated such as home automation. The technologies I've used and tested and what I have found works and what doesn't will eventually a way their own pages which will be listed here:

Following a career spanning 42 years with three major UK media sector companies, principally in the areas of telecoms and IP packet networking, I am now focussing on a small number of projects including how enterprise network techniques can be used to good effect in low cost small office/home networks.
I have extensive experience in the design and operation of enterprise LAN/WAN network environments including network architecture, IP address planning and the use of virtual network technology for separation of critical (broadcast media) services.
The VXNetWorx project documents how some of these techniques and services can be used in low cost small office/home networks.
